Design studios aim to create visual products to connect producers, consumers and solve problems to give new meaning to products. Designers generate innovative ideas for marketing purposes that are also intended to be printed and reproduced. Does graphic design only serve commercial purposes in the market? Can design progress have significance beyond economic forces?
Monez and the Florto Studio illustrator team-Gusde Sidhi, Ode Baskara, Yuma and Ayu-stepped out from the studio space to explore new possibilities. “Reimagined”, meaning to imagine again, catalyses illustrators and designers to delve into the opportunities that arise from their imagination. Florto Studio is on a journey-like a short trip, taking a break from the brief of client demands and inviting us to see deeper into each individual’s perspective and soul, re-examining their identity in their work as the reflection of their culture and environment.
The wonder of storytelling with visual language by Wicitra Pradnyaratih
As individuals, we naturally desire to connect, explore, and document every aspect of our lives. As we engage in these activities, we also strive to communicate and share our stories, seeking knowledge to enhance our well-being. We documented our approach through writing and illustration to preserve our traditional storytelling methods. The creation of illustrative works involves a complex process of developing a narrative; illustrations serve an essential role as companions to the narrative by visually capturing pivotal moments in the story. They breathe life into the situations, enriching the written content and visually representing the unfolding events. By stimulating the senses and fostering imagination, illustrations are the portal to a world where stories come to life.
Every illustrator presents their significant perspective through various dynamic ways of visual storytelling.
Their wide-ranging exploration and skillful execution result in captivating visuals that add depth and meaning to every story they seek to share. Utilizing various tools and mediums, from Monez’s Rangkung installation exploring Balinese mask and pattern design, Gusde Sidhi and Ayu Sujati applied their illustrations with different printing techniques, Ode Baskara presents his vector-style illustration with decorative hand tuft rugs, to Yuma’s captivating acrylic painting. Their work contributes to artistic development and plays a crucial role in preserving cultural values and heritage. Through their innovative creations, attention to detail in every stroke of their illustrations, and the careful process of bringing their work to life in exhibition spaces, they have demonstrated a profound commitment to upholding and celebrating the diversities of culture and observations in storytelling.
