Di Balik Laman: Tergores dan Kubiarkan Terbuka, provides an intimate exploration of Wulang’s artistic evolution. The exhibition highlights his ongoing journey through diverse mediums, including drawing, painting, video mapping, and animation. Known for his earlier work with the Papermoon Puppet Theatre and his co-founding of Studio Batu, a collective focused on short films and fine art, Wulang’s art often delves into themes of human relationships, mythology, and the complexity of personal experience.

This exhibition marks a pivotal point in Wulang’s creative journey, showcasing works that reflect his process of “becoming.” The artist has drawn inspiration from recent personal encounters, which he describes as “raw material” for his current body of work. The result is a series of pieces that cannot be easily understood in a single viewing, but instead present a narrative that is continuously evolving.

Gregorius Ragil Wibawanto, in his introductory note for the exhibition, praises Wulang’s artistic growth over the years, from his ambitious stop-motion animation exhibition Unlock to his more recent multi-medium works in Prelims. He notes that Wulang’s current work shows clarity and maturity in his storytelling, with forms that range from haunting to celebratory. “The process of becoming is never final,” Wibawanto writes. “It can always evolve further, shaped by what has been scratched and left open.”

The exhibition features a range of works, from standalone canvases to intricate collages and etched figures, all of which embody the tension between resolution and open-endedness. The scratches and unfinished edges of the pieces symbolize Wulang’s ongoing exploration of identity and personal growth. Wulang himself explains, “This exhibition is a way to distance myself from my experience illustrating book covers. Many stories and characters left a lasting impression, challenging me to reconsider the values I hold today. This gave me a new perspective to learn and deconstruct everything I thought I knew.”

Uma Seminyak’s Community Manager, Ruth Onduko, expressed excitement about revisiting Wulang’s personal works after their previous collaboration with Studio Batu in 2019. “We’re delighted to welcome Wulang’s art to Uma Seminyak, offering Bali’s artists, illustrators, and wider audiences the chance to experience his unique voice,” Onduko said.

Wulang Sunu, a graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, has built a diverse and successful career that spans graphic design, puppet theater, and multimedia art. His work continues to captivate audiences with its exploration of human connection, mythology, and personal introspection.

Di Balik Laman: Tergores dan Kubiarkan Terbuka promises to be an unforgettable experience for art lovers in Bali. The exhibition will be open until January 12, 2025, offering ample opportunity for visitors to engage with Wulang Sunu’s deeply personal and thought-provoking body of work.
